Commercial vehicle market in Europe: results of 9 months
Facebook Twitter October 29, 20240
The results of sales of new commercial vehicles in EU countries for January-September 2024 have become known. 1,170,310 light delivery vans were sold, which is 8.5% more than in the same period last year. This is due to growth in four key markets: Spain (+16.7%), Germany (+8.2%), Italy (+7.3%) and France (+5.8%), according to ASEAN.

But in the segment of trucks – with an indicator of 249,708 units. – there was a 7.5% decline. This is due to a 9.5% decrease in sales of heavy-duty vehicles. As for medium-tonnage trucks, a slight increase of 3% was recorded here. And although Spain and Italy showed an increase in sales of trucks of all classes by 12% and 2.1%, respectively, this did not compensate for their decrease by 7% in Germany and by 4.3% in France.

Another matter is the market of new buses, which showed a growth of 16% over three quarters – 27,400 units were sold. Spain (+21.8%) and Italy (+21%) were particularly notable.

Interesting statistics by type of drive among new commercial vehicles for 9 months of 2024. The sale of diesel cars increased by 10.6% – up to 989,975 units. (share 84.6%), as well as gasoline, by 7.5%, with a share of 6.1%. But “electric cars” were sold 12.8% less, which reduced their share from 7.1 to 5.7%. A decline of 4.3% was also observed among hybrid cars, the share of which was only 2%.

Diesel trucks continued to dominate the first nine months of 2024 with 95.3% of new registrations in the EU, despite a 7.3% year-on-year decline. Registrations of electric cars fell by 6.6%, while market share remained stable compared to last year at 2.2%. The results for electric cars by country were mixed: although the markets of Germany (+56.8%) and Denmark (+22.3%) grew, they could not compensate for the decline in France (-58.4%) and the Netherlands (-52 ) 7%).

The number of new electric bus registrations increased by 28.7% from January to September 2024, and the market share increased from 14.3% to 15.9%. Germany was the largest market by volume, with growth of 11.4%, while Italy showed growth of 72.9%, making it the third largest market in the segment. On the other hand, the French market decreased by 10.8% with 514 units registered. Sales of hybrid-electric buses fell by 13.2% and their share is now 9.5%. Diesel bus registrations increased by 19.4%, increasing their market share to 66.6%, which is 1.9% higher than the same period last year.
